Sunshine Coast Computer Kindness Program

THE DONATION PROCESS

Drop off Your Computer/Parts

We have limited resources to pick up donated computers or peripherals and so we rely on those willing to make donations to drop them off in lower Gibsons. Once you have completed the donation form, we will reply through email as soon as possible with the drop-off address. In some cases when a vehicle is available, we can try to arrange a pickup.

1

Delete, Repair, Rebuild

Your old computer is in good hands, and so is your data. We will delete everything (so don’t forget to back up before pick/drop up). Then we will fix, upgrade or source needed parts, reinstall either a Windows or Linux operating system and voilà, a brand new computer is born for a local child, family or non-profit in need.

2

Distribution of Computers

Once a system is repaired, rebuilt and ready to go, we are on our way to putting the computer into the hands of the child, family or non-profit in need. Requested computers are usually handled in chronological order, with children first in line. However, in some cases where there is an immediate need, a family, individual or non-profit may be moved up the cue.

We accept functioning Apple or Personal Computers (PC’s) with at least 2GB of ram. As well as peripherals such as monitors, hard drives, memory, printers, keyboards and mice. We also accept tablets (iPad and Android) and smart-phones but ONLY after they have been completely reset to default factor (new) status with old accounts removed.

I am always looking for help with this program. Since it takes a great deal of time to organise, communicate, arrange pickup or drop off’s, repair and rebuild each system, I can use help with picking up computers or making deliveries.

Yes. All donated computers with existing hard drives will be completely wiped clean and a new Windows or Linux operating system will be installed. Therefore it is important that YOU BACKUP all your data before donating. However, for a small fee ($50) we can also backup your data to a removable USB drive which you will need to provide.

Johnny Stork from Open Enterprise Solutions, Technology Zen and the free tech support group Ask a Geek are behind this computer and technology donation program.

All computer requests are processed in the order they are received, with children/families first. However, in some cases where there is a clear and immediate need by an individual or non-profit, those requests may be moved up the cue. In most cases children in need of computers will be supported first.

In some cases parts or peripherals like webcams may need to be purchased to ensure a system goes out with all the necessary features. If you wish to donate cash to support operational costs, gas or peripherals like webcams, please email donations@computerkindness.ca.

Although children in need of computers or other technologies are first in the que, we also provide donated computers to families and non-profit organizations in need.

Rebuilt computers are processed and donated in the order the were received, with children and families at the top of the list. Followed by individuals and then non-profit organisations in need.
